EditedProc: Preface to the 5th International Workshop on Theory and Application of Visualizations and Human-centric Aspects in Processes.

Preface to our workshop at BPM 2016 - TAProViz2016. Collaboration with my Austrian Friends - Stefanie Rinderle-Ma and Simone Kriglestein.  Preface contents can be found here.

Abstract: This is the fifth TAProViz workshop being run at the 14th International Conference on Business Process Management (BPM). The intention this year is to consolidate on the results of the previous successful workshops by further developing this important topic, identifying the key research topics of interest to the BPM visualization community. Towards this goal, the workshop topics were extended to human computer interaction and related domains.

Submitted papers were evaluated by at least three program committee members, in a double blind manner, on the basis of significance, originality, technical quality and exposition. Three full papers were accepted for presentation at the workshop from five submissions.

The papers address a number of topics in the area of process model visualization, in particular:

– Visualization of Layout Metrics for Business Process Models

– Eye Tracking and Process of Process Modeling

– Visually Comparing Process Dynamics

Paper: A 3D visualization approach for process training in office environments, COOPIS 2016

Have had a paper accepted for COOPIS 2016, part of a collaboration with my friends Banu Aysolmaz and Hajo Reijers, at VU Amsterdam. Paper can be found here.

Abstract: Process participants need to learn how to perform in the context of their business processes. Process training is challenging due to cognitive difficulties in relating process model elements to real world concepts. In this paper we present a 3D Virtual World (VW) process training approach for office environments. In this VW, process participants can experience a process in an immersive environment. They inter- act with VW representations of process elements in changing locations, based on process activities. By means of embodied 3D representation, deep immersion and engagement in this environment, enhancements in long term memory learning and episodic memory usage for knowledge retrieval are expected. Our illustration of an example process model shows the applicability of the approach. We list a number of future directions to extend the use and the benefits.

Topics:
Visual knowledge representations and data visualizations form a
particular kind of information systems in their own right, which deserve
a high degree of scientific interest. Information systems for
visualization are, e. g., analytical diagrams embedded into user
interfaces, model editors and domain-specific model visualizations,
dashboards, and interactive info-graphics. These kinds of systems are
characterized by specific functionalities that come with their own class
of requirements.

Possible research directions for submissions to the workshop include,
but are not restricted to:
- How can information demands towards visualizations be expressed as
part of a system engineering procedure?
- How can it be methodically ensured that visualizations are understood
unambiguously by different people?
- How can appropriate visualization types for the support of specific
system engineering tasks be systematically identified?
- How do domain-specific software-development procedures look like in
which visualizations are created as part of a model-driven visualization
(MDV) process?
- In which way do different cultural backgrounds of visualization users
potentially influence the specification of requirements towards
visualizations?

Additionally, if your paper addresses one or more of the following
topics, please consider to submit it:
- Analysis of the quality and efficacy of visualizations
- Notations and symbols in conceptual models
- Design concepts for interactive visualizations
- Evaluation and improvement of existing visualization techniques
- Cognitive aspects of communicating knowledge via visualizations
- Use of models and visual notations in practice
- Innovative interface concepts for user interaction with software
- Software-supported creation and use of information graphics
- Tool support for creating interactive visualizations
- Use of visualization in business process modeling
- Use of visualizations in collaborative settings
- Teaching and training of visualization design and use

Workshop Format:
The 1-day workshop will consist of a keynote, paper presentations for
full and short papers, as well as a demo-oriented session where recent
applications and prototypes displaying novel ideas in visualization
research are showcased. Each demo will be introduced in a short
presentation, and then demonstrated live with the running software.

Submission:
The following types of submissions will be accepted:
- Full papers, up to 10 pages
- Short papers (work in progress, research agendas, industry reports),
up to 6 pages
- Demo papers (demos, prototypes), 2 to 4 pages

Please upload your submission at
formatting style at

Each submission will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the
program committee. Based on the reviews and review scores the organizing
committee will make a selection of papers to be accepted for
publication. The workshop proceedings are planned to be published in the
IEEE digital library.

Submissions for the demo track do not need to fulfill the same degree of
scientific justification as paper submissions, and do not have to
explicitly address individual research questions. In turn, demo
submissions are required to be highly innovative and distinctively
creative compared to the state-of-the-art of existing approaches and
products.

Visualizations can make the structure and dependencies between elements in processes accessible in order to support users who need to analyze process models and their instances.

However, effectively visualizing processes in a user-friendly way is often a big challenge, especially for complex process models which can consist of hundreds of process components (e.g., process activities, data flows, and resources) and thousands of running process instances in different execution states.

Many challenges remain to be addressed within the broad area of process visualization, human interaction and user led design such as: scalability, human-computer interaction, cognitive aspects, applicability of different approaches, collaboration, process evolution, run-time requirements of process instances and applications, user-engagement etc.

The half day workshop will comprise accepted papers and tool evaluations. Papers should be submitted in advance and will be reviewed by at least three members of the program committee.

This year will also include a new innovation in the programme. Part of the workshop time (depending on the number of prototype submissions) will be set aside for focus group assessments of tools. We will be requesting tool report authors, successful workshop paper authors and panel members attending BPM, to assist in the assessment of demonstration visualization techniques and software. This evaluation process will be a service to attendees, as these heuristic assessments can be written up later as separate papers, or by the workshop chairs as an aggregated workshop outcome. Such evaluations will be an exciting addition to the workshop, as people experienced in Information Visualization, BPM, HCI and related fields, will provide detailed feedback on your prototypes. The evaluation approach is largely in the hands of the tool report writers, but at a minimum, should involve direct interaction with your software and some form of validation via a questionnaire.

All accepted papers will appear in the workshop proceedings published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing (LNBIP) series. There will be a single LNBIP volume dedicated to the proceedings of all BPM workshops. As this volume will appear after the conference, there will be informal proceedings during the workshop. At least one author for each accepted paper should register for the workshop and present the paper.

Paper: Process visualization techniques for multi-perspective process comparisons

Have just had the paper "Process visualization techniques for multi-perspective process comparisons" accepted for AP-BPM, written with Azzurra Pini (Politecnico Milano), and Moe Wynn (QUT).  This is an outcome of Azzurra's work as an intern with us at QUT in 2014.  the paper is stored here, please contact me if you want a copy.

Abstract - Organizations executing similar business processes need to understand the differences and similarities in activities performed across work environments. Presently, research interest is directed towards the potential of visualization for the display of process models, to support users in their analysis tasks. Although recent literature in process mining and comparison provide several methods and algorithms to perform process and log comparison, few contributions explore novel visualization techniques. This paper analyzes process comparison from a design perspective, providing some practical visualization techniques as analysis solutions. In order to support the needs of business analysts the design of the visual comparison has been tackled via three different points of view: the general model, the superimposed model and the side-by-side comparison. A case study is presented showing a preliminary evaluation of the application of process mining and visualization techniques to patient treatment across two Australian hospitals.

Paper: Storyboard augmentation of process model grammars for stakeholder communication

Just had a paper accepted for IVAPP 2014, "Storyboard augmentation of process model grammars for stakeholder communication," coauthored with my colleague Simone Kriglstein from the University of Vienna.  Paper was the product of an Honours (First Class) project by Kathleen Nardella at QUT.  Paper can be found here.

Abstract - Process models are often used to visualize and communicate workflows to involved stakeholders. Unfortunately, process modeling notations can be complex and need specific knowledge to be understood. Storyboards, as a visual language to illustrate workflows as sequences of images, provide natural visualization features that allow for better communication, to provide insight to people from non-process modelling expert domains. This paper proposes a visualization approach using a 3D virtual world environment to visualize storyboards for business process models. A prototype was built to present its applicability via generating output with examples of five major process model patterns and two non-trivial use cases. Illustrative results for the approach show the promise of using a 3D virtual world to visualize complex process models in an unambiguous and intuitive manner.

The representation of business process models has been a continuing research topic for many years now.  However, many process model representations have not developed beyond minimally interactive 2D icon-based representations of directed graphs and networks, with little or no annotation for information overlays.  In addition, very few of these representations have undergone a thorough analysis or design process with reference to psychological theories on data and process visualization.  This dearth of visualization research, we believe, has led to problems with BPM uptake in some organizations, as the representations can be difficult for stakeholders to understand, and thus remains an open research question for the BPM community.  In addition, business analysts and process modeling experts themselves need visual representations that are able to assist with key BPM life cycle tasks in the process of generating optimal solutions.

With the rise of desktop computers and commodity mobile devices capable of supporting rich interactive 3D environments, we believe that much of the research performed in computer human interaction, virtual reality, games and interactive entertainment have much potential in areas of BPM; to engage, provide insight, and to promote collaboration amongst analysts and stakeholders alike.  We believe this is a timely topic, with research emerging in a number of places around the globe, relevant to this workshop.

This is the second TAProViz workshop being run at BPM.  The intention this year is to consolidate on the results of last year's successful workshop by further developing this important topic, identifying the key research topics of interest to the BPM visualization community. 

Workshop Theme

Visualizations can make the structure and dependencies between elements in processes accessible in order to support users who need to analyze process models and their instances. However, effectively visualizing processes in a user-friendly way is often a big challenge, especially for complex process models which can consist of hundreds of process components (e.g., process activities, data flows, and resources) and thousands of running process instances in different execution states. 

Many challenges remain to be addressed within the broad area of process visualization such as: scalability, human-computer interaction, cognitive aspects, applicability of different approaches, collaboration, process evolution, run-time requirements of process instances and applications, etc.

Format of the Workshop

The ½ day workshop will comprise accepted papers and tool presentations. Papers should be submitted in advance and will be reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. All accepted papers will appear in the workshop proceedings published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing (LNBIP) series. There will be a single LNBIP volume dedicated to the proceedings of all BPM workshops. As this volume will appear after the conference, there will be informal proceedings during the workshop. At least one author for each accepted paper should register for the workshop and present the paper.
  
In addition, there will be a joint meeting of the participants, to continue the development of a process visualization research community that will continue to work together after the workshop.

Intended Audience

Researchers, practitioners and software vendors in the BPM space performing research into using graphics and interaction techniques to provide process visualizations across many topics will find this workshop to be of interest.

The title page must contain a short abstract, a classification of the topics covered, preferably using the list of topics above, and an indication of the submission category (regular paper/position paper/tool report). 
All accepted workshop papers will be published by Springer as a post-workshop proceedings volume in the series Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing (LNBIP). Hard copies of these proceedings will be shipped to all registered participants approximately four months after the workshops, while preliminary proceedings will be distributed during the workshop. 

Submitted papers will be evaluated, in a double blind manner, on the basis of significance, originality, technical quality, and exposition. Papers should clearly establish their research contribution and the relation to the theory and application of process visualization.

Paper: A theoretical basis for using virtual worlds as a personalised process visualisation approach

Have just had a paper written with my PhD student Hanwen Guo, "A theoretical basis for using virtual worlds as a personalised process visualisation approach," accepted for the Human Centred Information Systems (HCIS) workshop at CaISE, 2013.

Abstract: Communication processes are vital in the lifecycle of BPM projects. With this in mind, much research has been performed into facilitating this key component between stakeholders. Amongst the methods used to support this process are personalized process visualisations. In this paper, we review the development of this visualization trend, then, we propose a theoretical analysis framework based upon communication theory. We use this framework to provide theoretical support to the conjecture that 3D virtual worlds are powerful tools for communicating personalised visualisations of processes within a workplace. Meta requirements are then derived and applied, via 3D virtual world functionalities, to generate example visualisations containing personalized aspects, which we believe enhance the process of communcation between analysts and stakeholders in BPM process (re)design activities.

Paper: A visual language for the collaborative visualization of integrated conceptual models in product development scenarios

Just had a paper "A visual language for the collaborative visualization of integrated conceptual models in product development scenarios" accepted for CIRP Design 2013.  This paper is a part of a collaboration with Johhanes Herter and Jivka Ovtcharova at the IMI, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, where I have been on exchange for the last three weeks.

Abstract: In various industrial and scientific fields, conceptual models are derived from real world problem spaces to understand and communicate containing entities and coherencies. Abstracted models mirror the common understanding and information demand of engineers, who apply conceptual models for performing their daily tasks. However, most standardized models in Process Management, Product Lifecycle Management and Enterprise Resource Planning lack of a scientific foundation for their notation. In collaboration scenarios with stakeholders from several disciplines, tailored conceptual models complicate communication processes, as a common understanding is not shared or implemented in specific models. To support direct communication between experts from several disciplines, a visual language is developed which allows a common visualization of discipline-specific conceptual models. For visual discrimination and to overcome visual complexity issues, conceptual models are arranged in a three-dimensional space. The visual language introduced here follows and extends established principles of Visual Language science.

Paper: First international workshop on theory and applications of process visualization

Have just uploaded a version of the front matter for our TAProViz, BPM2012 Workshop in Tallinn, Estonia.

The workshop went very well, with great assistance by my co-chairs Simone Kriglstein and Stefanie Rinderle-Ma.  Thanks to all the presenters, especially to Manfred Reichert who presented the keynote.

Paper: Virtual world process perspective visualization

Just had a paper accepted for eKNOW in Valencia, Spain in Jan 2012. This is the first output of a collaboration I have with Johannes Herter and Daniel Eichhorn at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.





Abstract: Product Lifecycle Management has been developed as an approach to providing timely engineering information. However, the number of domain specializations within manufacturing makes such information communication disjointed, inefficient and error-prone. In this paper we propose an immersive 3D visualization of linked domain- specific information views for improving and accelerating communication processes in Product Lifecycle Management. With a common and yet understandable visualization of several domain views, interconnections and dependencies become obvious. The conceptual framework presented here links domain-specific information extracts from Product Lifecycle Management systems with each other and displays them via an integrated 3D representation scheme. We expect that this visualization framework should support holistic tactical decision making processes between domain-experts in operational and tactical manufacturing scenarios.

Video: Smart Services CRC Presentation

The Smart Services CRC have on their website a video of me delivering a six minute presentation on using virtual worlds for process training.

Video: Personal Processes Interface Mock Up



In this video we show a 3D mock up of a personal house purchasing process. A path traversal metaphor is used to give a sense of progression along the process stages. The intention is to be able to use console devices like an Xbox to consume business processes. This is so businesses can expose their internal processes to consumers using sophisticated user interfaces.

The demonstrator was developed using Microsoft XNA, with assistance from the Suncorp Bank and the Smart Services CRC.

I'll talk about it in more detail in a paper someday.
